A calcium-enriched feldspar mineral which is created when heat and pressure melt and mix various rocks and minerals - namely sodium (Albite), and calcium (Anorthite) with silicon and aluminium, Labradorite has a labradorescence (hence the name) which illuminates much like the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Also known as the 'Schiller effect'. Labradorite can be found in Italy, Greenland, Finland (sometimes known as Spectralite), Russia, Canada and Scandinavia. The crystals are often found in colours ranging from purple to grey-blue, green, yellow and brown.
Legend has it that an Inuit warrior saw that the Aurora had become trapped in a piece of stone - he used his spear to strike the stone to set the light free. It is a stone synonymous with art and magic, full of mysticism and energy.
In crystal healing, Labradorite is used to calm the mind, ignite imagination allowing for new ideas. It can be a useful stone to have when going through transformations and changes. Offering strength and perseverance in support of those changes.
